How to choose the ideal bridesmaid dress?

One of the most enjoyable dress-making processes we have in the atelier is creating bridesmaid dresses. I've always thought that special moments in life are richer when you share them with the people you love and who have been with you throughout your life.

Your bridesmaids are those important friends, cousins, sisters-in-law, and women in your life, and therefore you'll want them not only to accompany you but also to look super beautiful on your wedding day.



So far, it all sounds very easy and romantic, but it's true that choosing a style for them is not simple, as what we wear is usually very personal. Here are some tips on what you need to consider to find the best dress for your bridesmaids.

First, you should think about the number of bridesmaids you want to have. Consider that if there are few, say between 4 and 6, organizing will be easier, but the photo opportunities might not be as grand.

A good number is usually an even number, like 8 bridesmaids. That way, in photographs, you can place four on one side and four on the other. With ten or more bridesmaids, your photos will be super dazzling and cheerful. Of course, in this case, I would recommend that you plan everything with plenty of time, as you'll have more people to coordinate. A great advantage of having many bridesmaids, if you order custom dresses, is that the price will be more accessible, and they will appreciate you considering this, as they will also be investing in their makeup, hairstyle, accessories, and, of course, your gift, not to mention travel if you have a destination wedding.The second thing you need to consider is time. Everyone will be busy, so my recommendation is to start looking for your bridesmaids' dresses at least 6 months before the wedding and a minimum of 3 months before. Consider that when ordering custom dresses, they will need to come in at least 3 times: for measurements, for a fitting, and for pickup.


Once this is defined, you can decide on the variations you want. The variation can usually be in tone and silhouette; that is, the simplest is to have the same color and the same silhouette for everyone. But you can also choose the same silhouette and 2 tones or even 3 tones, and more daringly, several silhouettes and several tones. The rule here is that fewer variations will give you more visual harmony in your photos, while more variations will require more thought when arranging them.

As you may have noticed, we've already started talking about color here. To define the color, you should first think about the tones of your own wedding. If you have them, consider that some are good for decorating but not good for clothing. For example, yellow could be very cheerful, but not everyone would look good in yellow. My advice here is to look at color trends for weddings but also for bridesmaid dresses, and find those that are common. To define the color, it's also important to consider the venue, because the light will influence it. For example, if it's on the beach, aqua or bright colors look great. If it's in the woods or a garden, you can opt for more pastel, romantic, or even cool tones. If it's in an indoor venue, look for elegant and basic tones like blue, wine, or pink.



Another very important thing to consider is the silhouette. If all your bridesmaids have more or less the same height and more or less the same body proportions, congratulations, you are very lucky. However, most of the time there will be many body variations; there will be tall, short, very thin, curvy, with a lot of bust or no bust, etc.

The ideal solution is that each person can choose their own silhouette. However, remember that it is important to set certain guidelines. For example, all floor-length, no short skirts, or no low necklines. This is essential so that in the photo you avoid, for example, the one with the most pronounced neckline drawing too much attention and receiving negative comments. The ideal opinion for bridesmaids is: how beautiful the bridesmaids looked, how gorgeous the bridesmaids, how elegant the bridesmaids.


The more varieties of silhouettes, the higher the price will be, so you could give them a choice between two or three silhouettes that could adapt to different body types. I insist, avoid plunging necklines, both front and back, so that everyone looks beautiful. Don't choose very tight or very short dresses; look for basic and elegant options.


And finally, regarding the fabric, consider the climate. If you will be in a cold month and place, it is ideal to have thicker, more structured fabrics like velvet, satin, or mikado. In warm places, you can choose more flowing fabrics like chiffon, charmeuse, tulles, and thin crepes.


I believe that with all these points, you can choose a very good model. My extra recommendation is to appoint a bridesmaid representative to organize appointments and everything related to them, especially so that a few days before the wedding, you can be relaxed about that part. Also, remember that how you ask is how you receive.

Make your bridesmaids part of the event by asking them in a nice way, with a meal or a gift. Don't be afraid to ask directly if they want to be your bridesmaids and if they are willing to let you dress them. Make agreements with them so they feel comfortable and you have the image you want for your wedding.
